Model Answer:

Mid-Oceanic ridges are geological features created on the surface of oceans, at divergent or constructive plate boundaries. Mostly they are submarine features & are the longest mountain ranges in the world. They are the zones of high seismicity and vulcanicity. Eg. Mid-Atlantic ridge running North to South for more than 10,000 Kms.

The oceanic plates move opposite to each other, forming divergent plate boundaries, and leads to upwelling of molten magma from below. This drifting apart of tectonic plates under the sea is called sea floor spreading. The rising magma gets deposited at the boundary and forms high rise mountains on the ocean floors, called Mid-oceanic ridges.

Important features of Plate tectonic theory are:

  • This theory says that earth’s crust is divided into a number of plates & they are moving or drifting with respect to each other over the Asthenosphere.

  • The theory has been successful in explaining various geological features and events like Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mid-oceanic ridges, etc.

  • They form three types of boundaries- convergent plate boundary, divergent plate boundary & transform plate boundary.

  • The driving force for drifting of plates comes from the rising magmatic convection currents.

The plate tectonics has scientifically explained the occurrence of Mid-oceanic Ridges and laid the way for further research in understandinding these highest mountains (from sea floor) of the world.
