A good life is the realization of virtues that transform into values such as material, social, psychological, aesthetical, moral, ethical, and human. Ethical values may not always lead to positive consequences and a subsequent good (bad or so) life.

The crisis of ethical values in modern life can be traced to the shallow and narrow perception of life in terms of material values i.e., Artha and Kama (wealth and sensuous pleasure) alone. The sole aim of all life has become the attainment of personal success in quantified terms as the acquisition of money, property, social status power, and prestige. It is not only the economy but our society and personal life that is guided by the principle of, ‘higher the quantity of consumption, better the quality of life.

So, the crisis in modern values is mainly due to conflict of what consists of the good life where modern values such as individualism overplay the importance of material values of life and downplay other life values like the moral and ethical. For example when a student is being asked what is the goal then certainly the thought comes into mind that is money.

Since a narrow way of the good life cannot sustain in the long run and in the short-run too it just helps in accomplishing the individual goal, not the societal goal or highest eudaimonia.
