Renewables Integration in India 2021 (The Hindu, GS-3, Science and tech)

Context:- Renewables Integration in India 2021 is a report jointly launched by NITI Aayog and IEA. This is based on the outcome of workshops held in three states which include Governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. This document will decode the energy transition challenges which are faced by these renewable-rich states.

  • According to the report India’s power system can integrate renewables (175 GW by the year 2022 and 450 GW by the year 2030)

  • It needs proper planning, regulatory policy and institutional support, identification of resources, energy storage and advanced technology initiatives.

  • The states of India are needed to employ a wide range of options which includes more flexible operation in coal based power plants, a demand response, grid improvements so that they can transition to cleaner electricity systems.

  • This report will serve as a testament and a parent document for all the stakeholders in India.

  • The current practice of Self Scheduling by Discom must be replaced by the Market Based Economic Dispatch (MBED) model which will provide better optimization of economic dispatch and scheduling of generation capacities.
