Tokyo 2020: Mirabai Chanu bags silver

Context:– Today Mirabai Chanu of India has clinched a silver medal in weightlifting. This is the 1st medal in the 49kg category in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 

What is Olympics:-

  • She has lifted a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg) to win the silver medal 
  • She has breaked the record of Karnam Malleswari who had won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
  • China’s Hou Zhihui who lifted a total of 210kg won the gold medal and also Indonesia’s Aisah Windy Cantika won the bronze medal with a total of 194kg.
  • This is the 1st attempt of Mirabai Chanu, who attempted the 84kg category. 
  • Zhihui who is a Gold medal winner has created a new Olympic record with an effort of 94kg.
  • The Chinese lifter Zhihui also holds the world record with 96kg in this category.

  • It is the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating.
  • The Olympic Games are normally held every four years i.e. alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.
