History of Garba

  • The term garba originated from the Sanskrit term garbha which means womb., which is the symbol of productivity and generally related to the mother goddess .

  • In such dance women use to perform in a circular path  in front of the state of mother goddess

  • Generally it is known as the indegeneous dance of the Gujarat but gradually it spreaded in almost entire India

  • Generally people think that garba and Dandia , both are same but it is not reality. Dandia , even though originated from Gujarat also but , in dandia , sticks are mandatory to perform but in Garba , sticks are not required

  • Another perspective on the symbolic form of Garba is that as the dancers move around in circles making circular movements with their hands and feet, it represents the circle of life, which moves from life to death to rebirth, leaving only the Goddess Durga unmoved, unchanging and invincible.

  • It is performed in a ring form with circular movements that is quite similar to the Sufi dancers, who move in a spiral.

Dress

  • Chaniya Choli is the main dress for the women who perform Garba because when they perform in colorful costumes to the rhythm of a dhol or a drum, they  look vibrant and full of life in their attires.

  • Men they can wear colourful and loose  Kurta pajama (Kediyu- a short and round Paijama ) and turban Mojri or Nagras also

  • Chaniya Choli is a traditional Gujarati three-piece outfit

  • In Chaniya Choli dressing pattern choli or blouse must be attractive and colourful while Chaniya, is a long flared skirt  it should cour the feets of women completely Dupatta and Odhini is also the part of this dressing pattern . its colour should be matched with the colour of blouse

  • Chaniya Choli is characterized by their colorful designs and the embroidery or the mirror work done on them.

  • The whole costume is teamed up with Silver or Black Metal Necklaces, Big Earrings, Kamarband, Bajuband, Maang Tika ,and Juttis.

  • The modern day dance is actually a fusion of Dandiya Raas and Garba.

  • The mix of two has become very popular amongst the young generation, all over the world.

  • This particular dance form is famous in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada and Toronto. In all, people from most countries across the globe like to dance to the lively and peppy beats.

  • One of the most popular competitions among them happens to be Garba with Attitude which is hosted by ISC or Indian Sub-Continental Club from University of California.
