Ans: The population density usually varies from one state to another due to a variety of factors. This could be highlighted from the fact that Bihar has the highest density of 1028 person/km2 while Arunachal Pradesh has the least density of 18 person/km2.

Various factors influencing the population distribution could be clubbed as:

Geographical Factors

Availability of natural resources:

Alluvial Soil: It promotes a luxuriant growth of crops and vegetation that attracts a lot of population. Example- State of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc.

Fresh Water: In the form of rivers attracts

People: Ex- in Doab region of Ganga and Yamuna , there’s a scope of inland fishing, access to water etc.

Minerals:

Availability of the minerals attracts various industries as it generates employment.

Example- The coal and iron belt of the Deccan plateau

Availability of terrain:

Difficult terrain prohibits flourishing population in the region

Example- The terrain of Arunachal Pradesh restricts the population.

Non Geographical Factors

Establishment of industries

Employment : Could be generated which attracts a lot of people for the establishment

Example: Delhi-Gurgaon- Noida belt

Terrorism:

Factors like violence such as in Kashmir restricts the people to ensure a safe settlement in areas like this.

Government Policies:

Stable and inclusive government policies in the state usually permits a safe and sound settlement for the residents of the region. Example- Delhi

Transport Connectivity:

Good connectivity to the rails, ports, airports ensures trade and connectivity of the region.

This serves as the prime factor in the enhancement of the trade and the connectivity of the people of the region.

This, population diversity is a complex phenomenon driven by several factors . The organic relation of all these results in some regions becoming the population surplus and some becoming population deficient. Need of the hour is the National Urban Policy for accommodating diverse needs for the diverse populated regions.
