Introduction

Ethanol is a renewable biofuel produced from crops such as sugarcane, corn, wheat, and maize through the fermentation process. It is widely used as an alternative to gasoline because it helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Countries like India, Brazil, and the United States have adopted ethanol blending programmes to promote cleaner transportation and enhance energy security. However, while ethanol offers several environmental benefits, its production also creates challenges related to land, water, and biodiversity.

 

Positive Environmental Impacts of Ethanol

1. Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Ethanol is considered a cleaner fuel because the crops used to produce it absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) during photosynthesis. As a result, the overall carbon emissions from ethanol are lower than those from gasoline. Sugarcane-based ethanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, while corn-based ethanol also provides significant reductions depending on production methods.

2. Improves Air Quality

Ethanol burns more completely than gasoline due to its higher oxygen content. This results in lower emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), particulate matter (PM), and other harmful pollutants. Cleaner emissions help reduce air pollution and improve public health.

3. Renewable Source of Energy

Unlike petroleum, ethanol is produced from renewable agricultural crops that can be grown every year. This makes it a sustainable energy source that helps conserve non-renewable fossil fuel reserves.

4. Reduces Dependence on Fossil Fuels

Blending ethanol with petrol decreases the demand for crude oil, reducing oil imports and improving energy security. Countries like India benefit economically by saving foreign exchange spent on petroleum imports.

Negative Environmental Impacts of Ethanol

2. High Water Consumption

Growing crops like sugarcane and processing them into ethanol require large amounts of water. In water-scarce regions, this can increase pressure on freshwater resources.

3. Water Pollution

The excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides in ethanol crop cultivation can pollute rivers and lakes through agricultural runoff. This may cause eutrophication, algal blooms, and damage to aquatic ecosystems.

4. Soil Degradation

Continuous cultivation of ethanol crops can lead to soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and reduced soil fertility if sustainable farming practices are not followed.

5. Food versus Fuel Conflict

Using food crops such as corn and sugarcane for ethanol production may reduce food availability and increase food prices. This raises concerns about food security, especially in developing countries.

India has promoted ethanol blending through the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme to reduce oil imports and improve air quality. The programme supports farmers by utilizing sugarcane molasses and surplus food grains for ethanol production. However, challenges such as high water consumption, fertilizer use, and land pressure remain. To overcome these issues, India is encouraging the production of second-generation (2G) ethanol from agricultural residues like rice straw and wheat straw, which reduces dependence on food crops and helps manage crop waste.

Ethanol is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels because it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves air quality, and enhances energy security.
