10 Aug The Great Green Wall: Progress and Recent Challenges in the Sah
The Great Green Wall (GGW) is one of Africa’s most ambitious environmental and geographical initiatives. Launched in 2007 under the leadership of the African Union, the project was originally imagined as an approximately 8,000-kilometre belt of trees stretching across the Sahel, from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east. Today, however, the Great Green Wall is understood less as a continuous “wall of trees” and more as a broad programme of land restoration, climate adaptation and rural development. Its purpose is to restore degraded landscapes, improve food security, create employment and strengthen the resilience of communities living in one of the world’s most environmentally vulnerable regions.
The geographical importance of the project comes from the characteristics of the Sahel, a semi-arid transition zone between the Sahara Desert and the wetter savanna regions to the south. The region experiences highly variable rainfall, recurrent droughts, land degradation and increasing pressure on natural resources. Agriculture and pastoralism remain important livelihoods, making communities particularly dependent on the condition of land and water resources. Population growth and climate change have added further pressure. As a result, desertification and land degradation are not only environmental problems; they are closely connected with poverty, food insecurity, migration and competition over resources.
The Great Green Wall seeks to address these problems through several forms of restoration. These include tree planting, natural regeneration of vegetation, restoration of farmland and grasslands, soil conservation, water harvesting and sustainable agricultural practices. This represents an important shift from the original idea of simply planting a line of trees. In practice, successful restoration often depends on working with local communities and adapting techniques to local environmental conditions.
There has been significant progress, although estimates vary depending on how restoration is measured and reported. The latest UN reporting records 1.66 million hectares under restoration, around 24 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent sequestered or mitigated, and approximately 4.6 million jobs created, with more than 46 million people reported as beneficiaries. These figures demonstrate that the initiative has generated substantial activity across participating countries.
Some countries have achieved particularly visible local successes. Restoration projects have improved vegetation, soil productivity and agricultural opportunities in parts of the Sahel. In Niger, Senegal and Burkina Faso, for example, community-based restoration and traditional land-management techniques have helped regenerate degraded landscapes. Recent reporting has also highlighted signs of environmental recovery in parts of the Sahel, including improved vegetation and soil moisture.
Nevertheless, the Great Green Wall faces serious challenges. The first is finance. The original 2030 ambition is enormous: restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land, sequestering 250 million tonnes of carbon and creating 10 million green jobs. UNCCD estimates that achieving these ambitions requires tens of billions of dollars in additional investment. Although international donors pledged substantial funding through the Great Green Wall Accelerator, translating financial pledges into projects and actual spending remains a major problem.
A second challenge is political instability and conflict. Several countries in the Sahel have experienced coups, insurgencies and insecurity. Conflict makes it difficult for governments, development agencies and local organisations to operate safely in rural areas. It can also divert government resources away from environmental restoration toward security and humanitarian needs.
A third challenge is monitoring and coordination. The project crosses national borders and involves many governments, international organisations and local communities. A 2026 UN report noted that 389 projects had been registered by the end of 2025, but fewer than 90 contained data compatible with the initiative’s harmonised reporting system. This creates difficulties in measuring progress consistently and comparing results between countries.
Climate change itself presents another major obstacle. Higher temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, droughts and extreme weather can make restoration more difficult. Newly planted vegetation may fail if water is insufficient, while degraded soils can make agricultural recovery slow. This means that simply planting trees is not enough; restoration must be accompanied by water management, soil conservation and locally appropriate farming practices.
The Great Green Wall should therefore not be judged simply by whether a continuous line of trees has been created. Its greater significance lies in restoring landscapes and improving the relationship between people and their environment. Despite slow progress and major financial, political and environmental challenges, the initiative has demonstrated that large-scale ecological restoration is possible when local knowledge, community participation and international investment are combined.
The future of the Great Green Wall will depend on whether participating countries and international partners can close the funding gap, improve monitoring, strengthen local institutions and protect restoration projects from political and environmental shocks. Its success could provide an important model for addressing desertification, climate change and rural poverty, not only in the Sahel but in other dryland regions of the world.
