Context
The Paris based 39 number, Financial Action Task Force(FATF) has decided once again to keep Pakistan for its grade of countries, under increased monitoring giving it another three months to complete its commitment. Pakistan was removed from this list in 2015 but it was put back in this list again in June 2018.
Reason behind Putting Pakistan in grey list
The Body listed the remaining task that is demonstrating terror funding prosecution, accurate, effective and dissuasive and thoroughly implementing Financial Sanctions against all terrorist designated by the United Nations Security Council which include Lashkar e Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, Jaish e Mohammad chief Masood Azhar and other leaders of terror groups functioning in Pakistan
The way forward
- The death of the Director General of military strictly observed the ceasefire agreement at the LoC and revelations in the medium which have not been contacted by the government
- Pakistan’s next steps on the FATF directives to successfully prosecute terrorist and Terror financiers identified by the grouping are in its own interest
- Any proposed New Delhi Islamabad engagement in the next few months would get a much needed boost if Pakistan traverses this last Mile on the FATF Grey list addressing India’s main cross-border terror that emanates from its soil.
