Context

In a Recent verdict of Supreme Court it has been ordered to maintain status quo on the dismantling of the Navy’s decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat

About INS Viraat-

  • This was originally commissioned by the British Navy as HMS Hermes on November 18, 1859.
  •  This aircraft carrier took part in the Falkland Islands war in 1982. Indian Government brought  this British carrier in 1986 and rechristened it as INS Viraat. 
  • INS Viraat has played a major role in the peacekeeping operation of Sri Lanka which is known as Operation Jupiter. 
  • It has also been deployed during Operation Parakram which was related to an attack on parliament. 
  • It has participated in various international joint exercises like Exercise Malabar , Exercise Varuna and Naseem Al Bahar.

Motto- 

The ship’s Motto was the Sanskrit phrase “ Jalamev Yashya, Balamenv Tasya’’ which means who controls the seas, controls the world.
