FOR PRELIMS

What is the G7? Why is it important for India?

FOR MAINS

What are the main challenges faced by the G7 today?

Why in the News?

The 51st G7 Summit convened from June 16–17, 2025, in Kananaskis, Alberta, just days after the onset of the Iran–Israel conflict. Host Canada opted to forgo a traditional unified communiqué due to deep divisions, especially with the U.S. This reflects growing strains within the G7 over Ukraine, Middle East tensions, trade, and China .

G7 evolution

Decade Key Events & Evolution
1970s 1975: G6 formed (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, US) to tackle economic crises.

Why India’s Attendance at the G7 Summit Matters

1. Strategic Engagement with the Global North and South: India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy and a critical node in global supply chains, was invited by host Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis—its 12th invitation, and Modi’s sixth straight. This reflects the G7’s shift to include emerging economies in its discussions on global stability, energy, technology, and critical minerals
2. Canada–India Relations Reset: Following two years of tension—including allegations by Canada of Indian involvement in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Nijjar in British Columbia—PM Mark Carney extended the invite to Modi as a gesture to mend ties. He emphasised that having India at the table “made sense” considering its global economic influence
3. Powering Global Action on Key Challenges: India used the summit outreach session to spotlight pressing international concerns: energy security, climate action via initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, clean tech and AI energy nexus, and a unified global stance on terrorism
4. Geopolitical Balance in a Fragmented World: Amid rising tensions—Ukraine’s conflict, Middle East flare‑ups, China’s expanding influence—the G7 invited key non-members (India, Australia, Ukraine, South Africa, South Korea) to bridge the North-South divide. India’s presence is being seen as a stabilising force in this deeply divided international environment

Relevance of the G7 for India

1. Relevance at the Individual Country Level
Bilateral Partnerships: India uses the G7 platform to deepen ties with major economies such as the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan. At the 2025 G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi held substantive bilateral meetings with leaders from South Korea, France, the UK, Italy, Mexico, and Germany, focusing on trade, investment, technology (including semiconductors and green hydrogen), and counter-terrorism cooperation.
Restoring and Strengthening Relations: The summit has also facilitated the restoration of ambassadorial ties with Canada and renewed cooperation on critical minerals and supply chain security.
Technology and Innovation: The G7 countries are leading sources of technology and capital. India’s collaboration with these nations supports its ambitions in digital public goods, ethical AI, and advanced manufacturing.
2. Relevance at the Regional Level
Indo-Pacific Security: The G7’s commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific aligns with India’s regional security interests, particularly in countering authoritarian influence and ensuring maritime security.
Bridging North-South Divide: India has positioned itself as a pragmatic bridge between the developed North and the developing South. At the G7, India advocated for equitable access to green technologies, debt relief for developing nations, and a climate agenda that is inclusive rather than prescriptive
Regional Leadership: India’s participation signals its leadership role in the region, enhancing its ability to influence regional economic and security architectures.
3. Relevance at the International Level
Global Governance: India’s regular invitation to the G7 underscores its importance as a responsible democratic power and a key player in shaping global norms, especially in contrast to authoritarian regimes.
Addressing Global Challenges: India’s involvement is crucial for tackling global crises such as pandemics, climate change, and terrorism. The G7 has recognized that resolving major global issues is not possible without India’s participation and support, as seen in discussions on health governance, vaccine access, and climate action41.
Voice of the Global South: India channels the concerns of developing nations at the G7, advocating for their interests in global forums. This enhances its credibility and influence as a leader of the Global South, while also aligning with Western interests to counterbalance China and Russia.
Supply Chain Resilience: The G7 is keen to integrate India into new global supply chains, reducing dependence on China and fostering trusted partnerships in critical sectors.

India’s G7 Relevance

Level Key Aspects Examples / Impact
Individual Countries Deepening bilateral ties, tech partnerships, resetting strained relations Canada–India relations reset; bilateral meetings with G7 leaders on AI, trade, energy

Limitations of the G7

Limitation Explanation
1. Internal Divisions and Distrust Lack of unity among members (e.g., US vs. Europe, past US leadership unpredictability) hampers action.
2. Inability to Build Consensus Disagreements on key issues (Russia, trade, climate) weaken joint declarations and impact.
3. Limited Representation Excludes major emerging powers like India, China, Brazil; lacks global legitimacy.
4. Outpaced by Alternative Forums BRICS and G20 offer more inclusive platforms, challenging the G7’s global agenda-setting role.
5. Narrow Scope of Influence Focused on advanced economies, sidelining Global South priorities like development or equity.
6. Present Global Crises Dominance Security concerns (e.g., Ukraine, Middle East) overshadow broader global challenges.
7. Tech & Economic Fragmentation Struggles to regulate fast-evolving tech and economic divides, causing governance gaps.
8. Erosion of Global Leadership Rising multipolarity and rival blocs reduce the G7’s influence in shaping global governance.

Way Forward: Making the G7 More Relevant

Approach Description
1. Add New Members (e.g., India) Broaden membership to enhance legitimacy and represent emerging economies like India.
2. Build Genuine Consensus Foster unified positions on global challenges through inclusive dialogue and active collaboration.
3. Support Global Causes Move beyond rhetoric; provide real aid (tech transfer, climate finance, capacity building).
4. Address Global Crises Proactively Lead in conflict resolution, food and energy security, and humanitarian action.
5. Shared Leadership by All Members Let all G7 nations lead on their strengths to diversify and strengthen the agenda.
6. Boost Financial Aid to South Fulfil commitments like PGII; invest in infrastructure, health, and education in developing nations.
7. Reform & Institutionalize Inclusivity Create permanent outreach structures for regular invitees like India and Brazil.
8. Collaborate with Other Forums Work with G20, BRICS, and regional bodies to align goals and increase global impact.

Conclusion

The G7 must evolve from an exclusive club of advanced economies into a more inclusive, action-oriented platform. Its relevance in a multipolar world hinges on deeper engagement with emerging powers like India, genuine global cooperation, and a commitment to shared progress.
